1. Welcome message from our Chair
Welcome to the summer edition of our quarterly newsletter, this will be the final one for me. Over the last quarter we held committee elections and I am very excited that we have a flood of new committee members along with some current stalwarts, that are going to take WiPM forward; full details of the new committee can be found later on. They will be looking at how we refresh our volunteers list and there will be two committee members in charge of coordinating all volunteers going forward. So please let us know if you are interested (or still interested if you are already on our list) in supporting the SIG further in your spare time.
The committee will also be doing a refresh of the WiPM strategy and will be looking for your support to do this – so watch this space!
Planning for the APM Women in Project Management Conference 2019 on Thursday 26 September is pretty much complete, with the most varied line up of speakers we have ever had. I will be Chairing the conference this year so I am very much looking forward to seeing you all there to catch up with old connections and make some new ones.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank those committee members that are standing down this year for all of their work and dedication to WiPM: Alison Whitehead, Rebecca Dorey, Teri Okoro. I am also standing down due to other commitments, this is tinged with some sadness for me as I have really enjoyed my time on the committee but the overriding emotion is excitement for WiPM as the new committee members have come on board with bundles of enthusiasm and experience so I know that the future for WiPM is very bright.
Thank you all for your support during my time as Chair, and I wish the incoming Chair Vicki Griffiths (last year’s Secretary) all the best for the coming year.

3. Update on WiPM Vision and 2019-2020 plan
As part of our commitment to the APM Objective: Collaborate and engage: Accelerate the universal adoption of project management by people delivering change through collaboration and partnerships, WiPM is working closely with the Scott Walkinshaw, APM Head of Knowledge, to develop a mentor scheme.

In addition, as part of the WIPM conference our very own Carol Bell will be speaking about the support for individuals wanting to apply for the RPP and Chartered status. We will be setting up a linkedin group for this - Aspiring and Mentoring Women in Project Management. This group will be for women in the project, programme and portfolio management profession who wish to grow their career and would like to be a mentor to others and/or have a mentor. It is especially relevant for women wishing to apply for membership of the Association for Project Management at any level: Associate, Full Member or Fellow, and/or undertake APM Qualifications, and/or apply for Registered or Chartered Project Professional Status. We will seek to establish mentoring relationships through the LinkedIn group, however after that it will be up to members to make the relationship work. Mentoring takes place offline but advice can be sought through postings on the group page. Look out for an update on this at the conference in September and in the next edition of the newsletter.
4. Events update
The APM Project Management Conference London took place at Westminster Park Plaza Hotel on Thursday 2 May this year, with the theme ‘Power of the Profession: delivering value in a transforming world’. The conference explored how the profession is delivering Value in a Transforming World, and transitioning from a position of facilitation to influence. Speakers discussed how project professionals can take control of their projects and deliver benefits of greater value using innovative methods, tools and techniques. The three streams focused on adapting to develop your career, working smarter in your approach to projects and how to develop your performance.
The APM WiPM SIG was represented at the conference by Briony Bragg and Vicki Griffith, who took the opportunity to interact with attendees and promote the WiPM SIG conference coming up in September. Some of the key take aways from the conference -
- There is an increasing demand for project professionals with transferable skills across industries to tackle the challenge of successful project delivery.
- Bad practice gives rise to project failures – project professionals should constructively challenge practices, identify and address early warning signs in order to manage and mitigate them.
- Smart working cannot be over emphasised with the ever emerging technology and innovations. Artificial intelligence (AI) for example will free up time for more hypothesis, thinking, reflection, problem solving, communication and collaboration.
- Learn to manage and mitigate risk. More often than not threats that materialise are never on your agenda and can’t be accounted or planned for. There will be times of reasonable failure, but it’s never too late to make a change.
- Diverse project teams helps to improve collaboration, empower staff and implement better productivity and efficiency.

5. APM WiPM Conference 2019
The APM WiPM SIG is proud to present its 2019 APM National Conference, sponsored by Leidos, Hyde Park Solutions, and Underscore, which will be held on Thursday 26 September at ETC Venues 133 Houndsditch, London, EC3A 7AH.
This year’s conference will explore how diversity can deliver better balance in project management profession, the role of diversity when embracing transformation and change, tools and techniques project professionals can use to make their projects work harder and smarter. The conference will highlight topics relevant to project professionals from a diverse range of backgrounds, with concepts and ideas offering delegates practical takeaways that will add real value to day to day management of projects, programmes and portfolios. There is a fantastic line up of high quality and inspirational speakers from top organisations, who will be examining why diversity is important in transformation and change. There will be streams on Better Balance, Transformation and Change, and Tools and Techniques.
Judging from the excellent feedback from previous APM WiPM conferences, this year’s conference is not going to be any less, so do your best to attend and help promote the conference amongst your colleagues and organisation. Tickets are still available on the conference page of the APM website and it is open not just to project professionals, but to anyone that works in the project profession, or has an interest in it, male and female.
