1. Welcome message from our Chair

Welcome to the autumn 2019 APM Governance SIG newsletter. I hope that you are having a successful year to date. As before please do persuade your colleagues to follow this SIG on our microsite, and join the mailing list so they can get a copy of this newsletter and advice of events.

Whilst we have been becalmed awaiting the final outcome of the election, the APM Governance SIG has not been idle. In the summer a new committee was elected by you and has set about driving forward with our vision and objective.

Martin Samphire
APM Governance SIG Chair

2. Your committee

We wanted to take this opportunity to introduce the SIG committee members.

Our thanks to their contribution across the variety of activities that occur throughout the year.

3. SIG strategy and plan

The new committee met in August to agree its mission and objectives, which we have presented as a strategy and planning document.

It is worth reminding ourselves that good governance has a positive impact on change outcomes, another recent piece of research has again demonstrated this correlation ‘The relationship between project governance and project success'. A series of poor governance disasters continues to hit the headlines in recent years, so there is still much to do to improve.

4. Sponsor survey

Effective sponsorship is a crucial success factor in change outcomes. Our focus theme for this year continues to be the role of sponsor and sponsorship. We have held several events over the past year and published a series of blogs to facilitate discussion about this crucial role for project success:

We have also launched a survey to gain insight into the views of key players in enacting, supporting and directing sponsors and sponsorship. We are seeking the views of senior executives who undertake an enterprise sponsor role (or SRO role) for major change or are board members who appoint and hold sponsors to account in their organisation. Others who are involved in governance of change (e.g. Company Secretary, Non-Exec Directors, Auditors, Finance Directors Chief Projects Officer and similar titles) are also encouraged to input to the survey. Please do input to the survey - and also pass onto key individuals in your organisation for them to also input.

Take the survey

5. Current publications

If you are a recent follower of the APM Governance SIG, you may not be aware of our publications. The guides are available to purchase as a physical book and kindle or download free if you are an APM member. Do publicise these within your organisations, as you play an essential role to help us ensure good governance is adopted by all. A link to all the guides is given on the last sheet of the inserted strategy (see above) and also at the APM Bookshop.

I hope that you all have a successful close to 2019 and I look forward to engaging with you again in 2020 post the UK General Election.

Martin Samphire
APM Governance SIG Chair
