How Digital Innovation maximises project delivery webinar
Ben Hitchcock, APM SWWE Branch Committee Member, introduced tonight’s Webinar. We are delighted to welcome Mott MacDonald to present three presentations and a Q&A showcasing some of their digital strategies across the company.
Our presenters were:
- Ben Hitchcock, our host and APM member and Senior Project Manager
- Aimee Padden, event coordinator and Project Controller
- Ian Levers, MM UK Cost Management Technical Excellence Lead, CostX deployment and 5D BIM Lead
- Chloe Hartley, Project Quantity Surveyor and Early Career Professional Excellence Lead for Estimating
- Mariano Ameodo Mendoza, Digital consultant in the Information Management Team for Metros and Civils
- Eric Kleinhenz, principal leader for major projects and engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) services within Mott MacDonald’s Energy Unit
Ian and Chloe opened the event by showcasing Gen Zero, which utilises 5D BIM technologies to deliver better project outcomes. Mott MacDonald’s Advisory team were commissioned by the Department for Education to deliver Pre-contract Cost Management and Lifecycle Costing for two secondary schools. The commission was to develop a Carbon Zero Template Secondary School Design. The estimates for the scheme were developed using CostX software and utilised the 5D BIM functionality in a very complex digital environment where each designer was using different BIM Authoring Platforms to create the model and share the information. This is a great example of how digital innovation can produce better outcomes for the client and for ourselves in Mott MacDonald and how we can use digital to enhance our ability to deliver better projects that are sustainable.
Mariano then demonstrated how a team can collaborate virtually with a diverse team to create a product and positive outcomes. The team used a Hackathon competition to facilitate team collaboration, using a short timescale and a sprint mentality to come together to create a product that meets the aims of the event. The Hackathon event team was made up of Mott MacDonald staff from around of the world, tackling differing time zones, backgrounds and discipline, coming together with a common purpose. This purpose was to produce a solution to tackle transport and safety in cities creating a Smart Assistant which designs tailored routes. The team also had a target of sustainability. The project concentrated on a Smart Assistant, called MyWay and is based in Singapore. The Hackathon event was an opportunity to enable connected thinking and virtual collaboration throughout all stages of the Hackathon, utilising a multitude of expertise within the team.
Eric demonstrated how true collaboration and programme efficiencies were gained by implementing Moata Insights and Inspect on a 150-mile pipeline project in America. By using digital innovation, the project was completed below total project budget, achieved on land acquisition without benefit of eminent domain, delivery was on time within an aggressive schedule and achieved major value through digital project controls reporting, constructability, environmental permitting, procurement, traceability, bid packages and reporting. This was achieved using Moata Insights, SmartTrace and Moata Inspect. Eric shows how digital products can be used to better our project outcomes.
Thank you to all of our presenters and to those who attended the event.
