Yesterday, Thursday 7 December, we issued a statement commenting on the decision of the Government to accept an Institute for Apprenticeship recommendation to cut funding for the Level 4 Associate Project Manager Apprenticeship by a third from £9,000 to £6,000.

APM chief executive, Debbie Dore, said “Cutting the funding for the Associate Project Manager Apprenticeship will result in the end of this high-quality offering for individuals wanting to build their project management career. This a profoundly disappointing development.”

She continued; “The Employers Group for this apprenticeship standard has been clear that a quality offering could not be delivered at this reduced price and we expect that most employers and providers will now withdraw.”

“What makes this decision more perplexing is that this apprenticeship has been increasingly popular and successful with employers in the public and private sectors alike. Apprenticeships are supposed to be employer-led, yet in this case the views of employers have been completely disregarded.”

The Employers Group will meet in the new year to discuss options for a possible way forward.

Do we know yet what will happen to those of us already enrolled on the APM apprenticeship? Are courses likely to be axed part way through? I really hope not!
