Discussing the new Competence Framework for project managers in the built environment webinar

A new competence framework that applies to the management of projects in the built environment has been launched, following changes in the recently introduced Building Safety Act.

Introduced in response to learnings from the Grenfell Tower tragedy, this new framework will have significant implications for project professionals working in the built environment. APM is proud to have worked alongside RICS and CIOB in shaping these changes, to ensure project professionals have a clear understanding of how safer buildings can be created.

This webinar presented on Thursday 29 February, explored what these changes mean for project professionals and what they need to do next.

Rosalind Thorpe, Director of Education and Standards, CIOB

Ros Thorpe, CIOB’s Director of Education and Standards, joined the Institute in 2009 as an accreditation officer and took on the role of Head of Education in 2011. Prior to that, Ros worked as a teacher of English and corporate courses manager at the British Council in Moscow, where she lived for 10 years.

Ros has a degree in English and a post-graduate diploma in Russian, as well as various teaching qualifications. Ros is a Chartered Member of the CMI. Ros is responsible for managing the Institute’s regulated qualifications and exams, the accreditation process, and maintaining the Institute’s published standards, the Education Framework.

Steven Thompson BSc MBA FRICS, Senior Specialist, Construction, Knowledge & Professional Development, RICS

Steven is a Fellow of RICS, qualifying in 1984 as a Chartered Quantity Surveyor and he has spent the bulk of his career in private practice as a quantity surveyor and project manager. He has experience of most types of construction projects with some 15 years’ experience of working with global pharmaceutical companies advising on all aspects of research and manufacturing projects. In more recent years and prior to joining the RICS, he has worked Client-side with a property developer and outsourcing company, including PFI school developments.

Steven joined the RICS in September 2016 and is one of the Senior Specialists within the RICS Knowledge & Professional Development department and is responsible for the Quantity Surveying and Project Management groups within the profession. In addition, he was responsible for the publication of the NRM suite of guidance (in late 2021) and is currently considering an amendment to that suite for the impact of carbon accounting. He has been involved (with many others) in the creation of the UK Government Value Toolkit and is responsible for the forthcoming revision to the whole of the UK QS Black Book, combined with a new Global Construction Standard. He also is a member of the JCT Drafting Sub-Committee and is part of the group that has been preparing the JCT 2024 suite of contracts to be published shortly.
