APM Corporate Partner Arup expands global presence with multi-million-pound sustainable office
Global sustainable development consultancy, Arup, has welcomed colleagues into its new innovative office in central Birmingham. The new sustainable premises aligns with Arup's commitment to achieving net zero carbon by 2030.
Birmingham is Arup’s second-largest operational base in the UK, with the new multi-million-pound facility marking a significant investment into the city’s growing importance as a global business centre. The three-floor, 68,000 sq ft office space accommodates 800 staff offering over 90 specialisms. It is designed to strengthen connections and have a positive economic impact on employment and business opportunities in the region.
Sustainable features incorporated into the building’s design include:
- all-electric heating and hot water
- additional bike storage, lockers, and shower facilities to support active travel and reduce emissions.
- SMART sensors to enable dynamic monitoring of utilisation, comfort, and energy use in different workspaces throughout the office.
- natural and recycled materials, including innovations like sheep's wool insulation and a timber internal staircase, to minimise embodied carbon.
- various workplace settings, social areas, wellbeing zones, creative spaces and focus zones have been strategically integrated to meet the evolving needs of the modern workforce.
Cem Budak, Midlands Leader at Arup, said, “This move is a true milestone for Arup, both in the Midlands and globally, as we welcome our staff to the office for the first time. By making this major, multi-million-pound investment in our future right here in the heart of Birmingham, we are underlining our local credentials and strengthening relationships across the entire Arup global network.
“This is not just a local space, but a regional, national, and international hub for Arup that we are proud to have influenced through our expertise. As one of the finest commercial locations in the city, our new office is a space where our people can thrive, and which will drive engagement with our clients and local communities.”
Arup has been an APM Corporate Partner since 2012. APM’s Chief Executive, Professor Adam Boddison OBE, visited their new premises and said: “The success of what Arup has achieved sets a new standard in creating an innovative, functional, and sustainable workplace that fosters creativity and collaboration within our modern and dynamic society.
“I look forward to seeing the positive impact the new offices will bring and future accomplishments of Arup.”
