Are you managing a project, a complex project or a programme?

The art and science of programme management has become more mainstream in recent years and roles are becoming more prominent. How do we better understand what programme management is and how to apply appropriate techniques to support delivery? After all, a programme is not just a large project.

What would you like to learn about programme management, what formats of learning work for you, and how does this fit in with your own self development?

The APM Programme Management SIG (ProgM) is in the final stages of publication of the 2nd edition of our Introduction to Programme Management, with publication due imminently. The first edition was published over a decade ago, and this is a timely refresh in support of enhancing understanding of programme management. The Gower handbook of Programme Management is also due for publication in the near future. The two publications can help provide overview and context to support new and existing programme managers, as well as the various stakeholders involved.

One area I think the programme management community need to focus on is the education of future programme managers. I am particularly interested in how academic training are developing future colleagues, and what employers require and are expecting in staff. Does the training match up to the requirement and vice versa? What are your thoughts?

ProgM are beginning to develop a series of thought leadership white papers and would welcome views on topics that could be covered.  We also have webinars planned including our Programme Management in ICT webinar on 7th June.

Follow ProgM on Twitter for regular updates and discussions @apmprogmsig, and on our APM ProgM micro-site.

Thanks for the opportunity, for context I wanted to offer up consideration for one or more aspects using the working draft on "Guidance on programme management" as a working paper draft  - ISO WD 21504.The structure of the document for ease of reference:1 Scope2 Normative References3 Terms and definitions4 Key principles of programme management5 Concepts of programmes and programme management6 Managing programmesAnnex A (Informative) - Example of programme management and programmes within an organizationAnnex B (Informative) - Life Cycle Integration--From the above the largest section is Managing Programmes so I thought this to be an area of focus. The sub-sections:6.1 Introduction6.2 Programme alignment and benefits management6.3 Programme organisation6.4 Programme plan and control6.5 Programme Integration--Perhaps could be fun and interesting to canvas a straw poll of members to determine a priority on topics 6.2 to 6.5 inclusive if you see merit. It's just an idea, hope it appeals.Kind regardsRichardSunny Qatar
