APM Honorary Fellowship recognises and celebrates those who have made (or can make) a major personal contribution to the project management profession and also achieved highly creditable, eminent and notable achievements in their own profession and careers. For those interested in Fellowship, the requirements for Fellowship can be seen here.
We’ve awarded Honorary Fellowships since 1984. Those honoured include respected founders of – and ongoing contributors to – the science, theory and practice of project and programme management. Each recipient has received our thanks, appreciation and recognition through the award of Honorary Fellowship. The names and a brief description of each appears below.
The number of Honorary Fellowships awarded is restricted. Honorary Fellows can attend the same events and receive the same benefits as Fellows. New Honorary Fellows will be announced at the Fellows Forum events. Please note that individuals who are eligible for Fellowship are not now eligible to be Honorary Fellows.

Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock MBE – Awarded 2018
Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock has a distinguished and varied career across a number of fields, including academia and broadcasting, all undertaken with verve and enthusiasm to inspire those engaged in project management and other professions. top
John Algar
John Algar is head of portfolio, programme and project management at the world-renowned Cranfield School of Management. He has held a position at Cranfield for more than 20 years, during which time he has developed the business school’s project-related courses, led research projects and taught project skills to senior business leaders.
John Allen (Deceased) – Awarded 1994
John Allan was the Editor-in-Chief of Construction News which consistently promoted APM awards and conferences. John is possibly the original number one in the first membership list that led to APM. top
Russ Archibald (Deceased) – Awarded 2003
Russ Archibald was a founding member of both APM and PMI. He had three careers, first in military / aerospace for nineteen years, then as a Corporate Engineer and Executive for seventeen years and finally as a consultant for more than thirty years. A highly regarded author he held bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering. He was also awarded an honorary PhD in Strategy, Program and Project Management from Ecole Superieure de Commerce de Lille. top
Sir John Armitt CBE – Awarded 2008
Sir John Armitt was chairman of the 2012 Olympic Delivery Authority. He is a past president of ICE, chair of the National Infrastructure Commission and has been an influential UK leader for several decades. He received the Sir Monty Finniston Award for a life time of achievement in 2012. top
Bob Assirati – Awarded 1998
Bob Asirati has held a range of senior governmental posts. While with Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA) he was responsible for the development of PRINCE2TM, Managing Successful ProgrammesTM and ITILTM. When CCTA merged into the new Office of Government Commerce (OGC) he held a variety of senior roles and worked with government departments to support the largest and most complex delivery projects. He was director of the Major Projects Authority. top

Neville Bain was an avid supporter of APM notably related to project governance as Chairman of Institute of Directors (IoD) and highly experienced in business. top
Tim Banfield – Awarded 2012
Tim Banfield was Director of National Audit Office for twenty-five years, Director in Major Projects Authority in Cabinet Office and positive supporter of project management and APM. top
Dr Martin Barnes CBE (Deceased) – Awarded 2001
Martin Barnes was a founder member (no.10) and provided outstanding service to APM since its inception and to the project management communities including as APM Chairman from 1986 to 1991, bringing in Sir Monty Finniston as President and as President himself from 2003 to 2012. He has long active involvement with IPMA. His professional career included developing his own consulting firm which merged with what is now PwC. He holds a doctorate, awarded in 1971 for research into improved methods of financial control for engineering projects. He is also credited with the invention of the classic Time / Cost / Quality triangle which came to public attention on BBC Horizon series on managing the development of Royal Ascot race course for HM The Queen; and for other project management techniques over the years. He was Executive Director of Major Projects Association and is the recipient of the Chartered Institute of Management’s Special Award and of the Institute of Civil Engineers’ Watson Medal in UK, both for his personal contributions to the development of project management. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the UK’s highest engineering recognition and is a Churchill Fellow. He is a past President of ICE and devised the NEC forms of contract. He received a CBE in 2009 for services to engineering.

John Bartlett – Awarded 2012
John Bartlett is a writer, best known for his work related to PRINCE2TM, multiple author covering many project management topics including risk and methodologies. He has been an APM assessor, lecturer and all-round participant in project and programme management.
He has made major contributions to APM and the profession, including as a pioneer of programme management definition and development in UK and as a member of APM Council from 1996 to 1999. top
Carol Bell – Awarded 2014
Carol Bell was instrumental in the delivery of the Eden Project in Cornwall. She has had a close involvement with APM particularly with the APM Awards, Women in Project Management and other aspects.
Sir Howard Bernstein (Deceased) – Awarded 2006
Howard Bernstein was Chief Executive of Manchester City Council from 1998 to 2017 and has been responsible for setting development goals and encouraging investment in the city. He championed the Manchester Metrolink and many other projects including responding to severe damage, rejuvenation and new build, which make Manchester the metropolis it is today. top
Doreen Bevan (Deceased) – Awarded 1992
All successful organisations need conscientious, dedicated, talented and versatile people in the early days who set the venture on its way and also influence the culture of the organisation. APM was well served by Doreen Beven from 1975 who went beyond the call of duty across many aspects generally called Secretarial services. top
David Birch – Awarded 2016
David Birch is experienced in delivering high-profile UK and international project portfolios for world-leading engineering and construction contractors. He delivered and applied the controls for the 2012 Olympic Games in London including the Yellow Book. top
Professor Denise Bower OBE – Awarded 2014
Denise Bower was made an Honorary Fellow of APM in 2014 for her work in collaboration with Infrastructure UK (UK Treasury) to develop an Infrastructure Route Map to enable more informed project and programme initiation and delivery decisions. She is Executive Director of the Major Projects Association and Professor of Engineering Project Management at the University of Leeds where she established the Engineering Project Faculty. With a career spanning senior academic roles, ground breaking research, practical engineering and leadership, she has been a front runner in developing project management in industry and government where she has contributed to several Cabinet Office Task Groups. top
Andrew Bragg - Awarded 2019
Andrew was Chief executive of APM for 10 momentous years. He went above and beyond normal duties in the long journey to achieve APM’s Charter, which is proving a pivotal moment in development of the project profession. He contributed significantly to the activities of IPMA, for some of the time as a member of its Executive Board, outside of normal APM CEO duties. top
Mike Brown – Awarded 2011
Mike Brown had an extensive career as an engineering project manager with assignments in many parts of the world. He became Head of Project Management at Rolls Royce plc and chair the BSI PM Committee. top
Mike Browne – (Deceased) – Awarded 2011
Mike Browne was the founding chairman of the Northern Ireland Branch of APM and has provided a sustained contribution to APM and the profession. He was the Programme Director at University of Ulster for MSc Construction and Project Management. top
Admiral Sir Lindsay Bryson KCB (Deceased) – Awarded 1996
Sir Lindsay became President of APM from 1991 to 1995 after a career in the Royal Navy that saw him become the first engineering officer to be appointed controller of the Navy, responsible for development and procurement of ships and weapons. He played a significant part in emergency procurement projects during operations in the Falklands conflict. In addition to his crucial role as President of APM he was President of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (1985-86). top
Robert Buttrick – Awarded 2013
Robert Buttrick is the renowned author of a best-selling text-book on project management. He is well known for his development of project and programme management at BT plc before becoming a working consultant with the Cabinet Office on the development of their project policy. He is a major contributor to the BSI drafting committee responsible for BS 6079 and he has been highly influential in the development of ISO standards on project and programme management. top

Tim Carter - (Deceased) – Awarded 2009
Tim Carter was chairman of APM 1991-1993 and for many years ran the APM Awards. He played a pivotal role in delivering the Eden Project and was one of the first project managers to adopt the New Engineering Contract (NEC). He received the Sir Monty Finniston Award in 2007. top
Steven Carver – Awarded 2011
Steven Carver is a senior lecturer at Cranfield University specialising in project management. He is a serial entertaining keynote speaker and personality at APM events. top
Hassan Chaudhury – Awarded 2024
Hassan Chaudhury has a varied background across social work, NHS informatics, and public health. He co-founded Health iQ, an award-winning agency focusing on real world evidence. He worked with the UK Government to develop the national offer for digital health, and he currently works for Health Data Research UK (HDRUK), UCL, and King’s College London. top
Len Connor OBE (Deceased) – Awarded 1991
Len Conner was a founder member of APM and an early chairman from 1979 to 1982. top
Dr Terry Cooke-Davies – Awarded 2008
Terry was a founder and Executive Chairman of Human Systems International, a global consulting firm which assessed the excellence of organisation’s project, program and portfolio management capabilities and operated a leading-edge knowledge management network. He received a PhD in 2000, and a Sir Monty Finneston Award from APM in 2006 for his outstanding contributions to the development of project management as a vehicle for effective change. top
Keith Corrie – Awarded 1999
Keith was an effective APM Honorary Secretary from 1992 to 1998. top
Dr Lynn Crawford – Awarded 2014
Lynn Crawford has been actively engaged in the development of global standards for project management since the late 1990’s and has been instrumental in the formation and work of the Global Alliance for the Project Professions (GAPPS). She is the Director of the Project Management Program at The University of Sydney, Australia, Visiting Professor at Cranfield University, School of Management (UK) and Honorary Adjunct Professor at Bond University. She is a recipient of the Sir Monty Finniston Award (2014) for lifetime achievement. top

Professor Darren Dalcher – Awarded 2011
Darren Dalcher is founder and director of the National Centre for Project Management and is Professor in Strategic Project Management at Lancaster University Management School. He is a prolific author, writer and editor on PM related and other themes. He was the influential Academic Advisor and Consulting Editor of the APM Body of Knowledge 7th edition. top
Professor Andrew Davies – Awarded 2020
Professor Davies is the RM Phillips Freeman Chair and professor of innovation management in the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), University of Sussex Business School. He has collaborated with leaders of some of the UK’s largest infrastructure projects including Heathrow (terminal 5, terminal 2 and the third runway), the London Olympics, Crossrail, the Westminster Palace Restoration and Renewal Project, and more. He authored APM’s 2019 report Project Management for Large, Complex Projects and contributed to Future of Project Management, a collaboration between APM, Arup and The Bartlett School of Construction and Project Management at UCL. top
Myrtle Dawes – Awarded 2019
Myrtle has had a varied career mostly recently as Planning and Dispatch Director for Centrica and before that Director Projects and Decommissioning. Myrtle has over 25 years’ experience in the energy sector covering roles in operations, process, process safety and projects. She started her career with Genesis Oil and Gas Consultants before joining BHP Billiton where she was responsible for the delivery of substantial oil and gas projects in the UK and overseas. She is a past finalist for the Black British Business Award for her contribution to the UK infrastructure industry. In 2016 Myrtle was elected to the UK Board of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and is a chartered chemical engineer and was cited in the one of the Cranfield 100 Women to Watch. top
Howard Dickel – Awarded 2012
Howard Dickel led BT’s London 2012 Olympic Programme to design, deliver and operate all of the fixed and mobile, voice and data communication networks a role he held from early 2008. This involved ensuring that communications were in place for all the media centres at every Olympic venue.
Howard was the winner of Geoffrey Trimble Award in 2011 for his thesis on knowledge management. top
Adrian Dooley – Awarded 2010
Adrian Dooley has been a founder and technical director of the magazine Project Manager Today, founder of the Projects Group, author of Praxis and a former member of APM Council. top

John Faiers (Deceased) – Awarded 2006
John Faiers was an enthusiastic promoter and supporter of APM and project management within higher education. As chairman of APM Midlands Branch he was the first to introduce a successful chapter network. top
Peter Fielder – Awarded 2005
Peter Fielder has been Chairman of BAe Systems plc Project Management Council responsible for the project management function and the strategic direction of over 3,000 members of the project community who run some of the most complex projects in the world. top
David Firnberg (Deceased) – Awarded 1984
David Firnberg was APM’s second President between 1978 and 1984. David had achieved success and reputation in a number of other fields and during his presidency he was a very valuable but unobtrusive influence. He was appointed as Director of National Computing Centre Ltd in 1974. He also went on to serve as chief executive of the Strategic Planning Society and president of the British Computing Society (BCS). top
Dr Eddie Fisher – Awarded 2011
Eddie Fisher received his Honorary Fellowship in recognition of his outstanding international contributions, not only to promote the concepts and principles of project management but to project management as a profession. Professor Bent Flyvbjerg – Awarded 2011
Professor Flyvbjerg is Professor of Major Programme Management at Oxford University’s Said Business School and the first Director of the BT Centre for Major Programme Management. He is an author and editor on diverse topics and is widely published and read including on why projects fail and succeed. top
Philippa Foster Back – Awarded 2018
Philippa Foster Back has been playing a vital role in developing ethics in business, including corporate organisations in the project management field, as well as championing the role of professional and chartered bodies in guiding their respective professions. top

Eric Gabriel (Deceased) – Awarded 2001
Eric was a mechanical engineer in the construction industry. He was a founder member and provided outstanding service to APM including being APM Chairman. He has been a strong supporter of project managers with his roles on the construction of the Sainsbury Wing of the National Gallery and the rebuilding of the opera house at Glyndebourne. For good measure he was also an effective Chairman of APM from 1982 to 1986 and fourth President of the International Project Management Association. top
Sir Peter Gershon KBE – Awarded 2005
After his early career in telecommunications and defence industry, Sir Peter Gershon joined the UK Government’s Office of Government Commerce (OGC) as its very first Chief Executive, charged by the Prime Minister with implementing a programme to reform the way the British government handles the procurement budgets. He has been a strong supporter of project and programme management both in Government and industry. top

John Glanville – Awarded 2005
John Glanville is a specialist in project and programme management in the private sector with periods with ICI and BNFL before becoming Director of Programme Management Centre for Rolls Royce and an executive director of Major Projects Association. top
Alistair Godbold – Awarded 2014
Alistair Godbold has made a formidable and broad contribution to APM including as Deputy Chair of APM Board and APM representative on IPMA Council of Delegates with other advisory positions. He has also served as a director of Major Projects Association. top
Dr Jim Gordon (Deceased) – Awarded 1992
Jim Gordon was a pioneer. He was one of the seven persons who built the foundations of professional project management in UK – leading to APM to which he provided outstanding service. He was a founder member and long-standing chairman of British Standards Institute (BSI) Technical Committee now MS2 – leading to the famous BS 6079 and its constituent parts. He was also a key member and later chairman of ISO Technical Committee – ultimately leading to ISO 21500 series. His APM activities included with the Branches, notably Midlands Branch of which he was a pioneering founder member. top
Air Marshal Sue Gray CB, OBE – Awarded 2018
Sue Grey is recognised for her contributions as an individual to public service and as a trailblazing role model. She was the second woman in the Royal Air Force to be promoted to Air Vice-Marshal, with responsibility for procurement and maintenance of all combat aircraft, training aircraft and remotely-piloted air systems for the armed services. In 2019 she was promoted to Air Marshal and thus became the RAF’s first ever female three-star officer and the most senior female military officer in the British Armed Forces. top

Louise Hardy is, amongst other things, a STEMNET ambassador and fellow of the Institute of Civil Engineers specialising in the delivery of projects including London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics and the Jubilee Line extension. Louise was included in the list of the top 50 most influential women in engineering. top

Air Marshal Sir Reginald Harland KBE, CB, AE (Deceased) – 2003
“Sir Reggie” had a highly distinguished engineering career in the Royal Air Force right through from 1939 to 1977 including being Project Director for the Harrier aircraft at the Ministry of Technology and many other senior positions. He was also President of the Society of Environmental Engineers. top
Don Heath OBE – Awarded 2005
A dedicated railway man he was responsible for many rail projects, including the electrification of the East Coast Main Line before becoming responsible for all project management on British Railways between 1988 and 1991. He was APM chairman 1998-2000 and a valued vice President for a number of years. top
Simon Henley – Awarded 2015
After 32 years as an engineering officer in the Royal Navy rising to Rear Admiral Simon joined Rolls Royce and became chief executive of Europrop International. Simon became President of the Royal Aeronautical Society in May 2018. top
Sir David Higgins – Awarded 2011
Sir David has a distinguished career in major projects including 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics, Network Rail and as a former non-executive chairman of HS2. top
Dr David Hillson – Awarded 2007
David Hillson is a long-term, international, enthusiastic exponent of risk management and an early member of APM Risk SIG and publications. top
Paul Hirst – Awarded 2013
Paul Hirst is a leading expert and exponent on project and programme management across UK Government including the Cabinet Office’s Project Leadership Programme. He is a supporter of APM and contributor to Professional Standards and Knowledge. top
Dr Ed Hoffman – Awarded 2010
Ed Hoffman was NASA’s Chief Knowledge Officer and was responsible for the establishment of its Project Academy. He has been a powerful advocate for all aspects of project management around the world. He also worked with leaders of industry, academia, professional associations and other government departments to develop the agency’s capabilities in program and project management and engineering. top
Peter Horsted – Awarded 2015
Peter was recognised with an Honorary Fellowship for his major contributions to the profession including to APM as Chair of the Corporate Members Leadership Group. He is Head of Field Programmes at Royal Mail. top
Dr Sally Howes OBE – Awarded 2019
Dr Sally Howes is the chair of the UK Space Agency Steering Board. She has a range of non-executive and consultancy roles, specialising in cyber and digital transformation. She was previously a member of the Executive Team at the National Audit Office, responsible for evaluating the implementation and value for money of government technology and transformation programmes and for implementing digital transformation within the NAO. She has also worked for the Ministry of Defence as director of Commercial Services. Before joining the MoD she spent 4 years as director general for the Society of British Aerospace Companies (now ADS Group). Dr Howes was awarded an OBE or services to the UK space industry in 2004. She holds a PhD in hydrology from the University of Bristol, and a Master of Arts in geography from the University of Cambridge. top

Dame Sue Ion is a key personality, engineer and an expert advisor including to government officials on the nuclear power industry. She is an advocate of engineering studies and education. top

Phillip Isgar is an experienced project management practitioner in energy, rail, retail and infrastructure. He has been and is an APM representative and participant on committees, panels, awards, conferences – both internally and externally. top

David James has made significant contributions to the standing and development of the project management profession in UK through his chairmanship of Transport for London (TfL) Programme Advisory Group which provides independent assurance and expert advice to the mayor of London. Bill Johnson – Awarded 2016
Bill Johnson is a former APM Branch chair, APM Council member and Board member. He has been instrumental in developing tools and techniques to make project management easier. He was the sponsor for the influential Project Management Pathways published in 2002. top

Sue is an influential director, manager and engineer. Her career in major transport schemes has been extensive including; not least with involvements in the transport provisions for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in London and on HS2. She became the first female President of APM in 2019. top

The Chairman of P&O, Lord Stirling, said on Sir Frank’s retirement “Frank has made Bovis what it is today, one of the world’s leading project management and construction service companies. He has been at the forefront of the British construction for the last 20 years and enjoys a worldwide reputation as one of the industry’s leading figures.” top
Bob Laslett – Awarded 2014
Bob Laslett is chairman and global CEO of Chaucer Group. He in an inaugural member of APM and has been supporting APM and making major contributions to the profession for many years. He also has close links with a number of association football clubs and a range of other Fellowships. top
Albert Lester (Deceased)– Awarded 2007
Albert Lester has had a major influence on project management and the PM community over many years including in professional practice through his publications and his service on BSI committees. He made major contributions to the acceptance of health and safety needs in projects and project management. His joint book with Geoffrey Trimble on Project Planning and Control has been acclaimed for its quality of writing and wit – now in its 7th edition. top
Dr Ralph Levene (Deceased) – Awarded 2000
Ralph Lavene was a founder member of APM and played a key role in reorganising its management structure in 2001-02. He combined his contributions to APM with his academic roles which included extensive research and as Director of Project Management Programmes at Cranfield School of Management. top
Sir Leigh Lewis KCB – Awarded 2011
Sir Leigh Lewis was a career civil servant who became Permanent Secretary of Department of Works and Pensions from 2005 to 2011 where project management has been fully ingrained. top
Peter Lord (Deceased) – Awarded 2002
Peter Lord forged links between APM and RIBA. top
Geoff Lowe (Deceased) – Awarded 2014
Geoff was a Chartered Civil Engineer and Head of Project Management at Sellafield. He was a valuable initial member of the reconstituted APM Board and also a useful long-standing member of the Audit, Risk and Strategic Policy Committees. He spent forty years working to drive forward project management capabilities in the UK nuclear industry with some success. top

Sir Cameron has a lifetime record of producing the widest array of highly successful projects in the theatrical (and film) sectors including the programme to completely refurbish and reinstate the Victoria Palace Theatre. top
Hilary McGrady – Awarded 2019
Hilary became Director-General of the National Trust in 2018. She's worked for the Trust since 2006 since joining when she joined as regional director for Northern Ireland. Hilary later became regional director for Wales and the London and South East region and in 2014 was appointed chief operating officer, leading the operations and consultancy teams. Originally trained in graphic design, Hilary’s career path started in the drinks industry in brand and marketing. In 1998 she moved to become director of a national arts charity and was seconded in 2002 to become CEO of Belfast’s bid to become European Capital of Culture. top
Mary McKinlay – Awarded 2015
Mary has effortlessly and effectively covered a whole range of roles as a volunteer at APM – on Boards, with panels and committees, at Branch level and with the Conference and the Awards. At the same time, she has been actively involved at Board levels with International Project Management Association (IPMA) and with International Centre for Complex Project Management (ICCPM).
Mary qualified as a systems engineer and has worked in project management for over thirty years as a practitioner, researcher and trainer. Her specialist interests are in aerospace and defence, the principles and theories of project and programme management and in developing closer relationships between industry and academia. top
Sir Roy McNulty CBE – Awarded 2011
After a distinguished career related to aviation Sir Roy became Deputy Chairman of the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Delivery Authority. top
Amanda Medler – Awarded 2020
Amanda’s role as chief guide makes her Girlguiding’s most senior volunteer. Amanda has been involved in guiding her whole life and has been a Girlguiding qualified trainer since 2003. In addition, Amanda is a senior consultant at Adapta Consulting, an organisation that specialises in working with charities, membership organisations and other not-for-profit organisations. She has also worked as a project manager for Citizens Advice and in the financial sector. top

Professor Peter Morris – Awarded 2003
One of the earliest PhDs in project management, Peter Morris also had a distinguished career as Executive Director of INDECO and prior to that as a main board director at Bovis Lendlease before returning to academia, first at the University of Manchester and later at University College London (UCL). He was also Executive Director of Major Projects Association. He was Chairman of APM and Deputy Chairman of IPMA. His over 110 papers and several books remain highly influential and he has been awarded both PMI and IPMA Lifetime Achievement and Research Awards. Mike Nichols was elected Chairman of the newly constituted APM Board in 2006 and served continuously until 2013 during which time he consolidated the professionalism of APM and directed the route to Chartered status and success.

David Pells has played a major part in bringing national PM associations together over an extended period. Firstly he started the original Global Project Management Forum in 1990s and later set up PM World Inc which publishes PM World Journal and operates PM World Library – a major resource for PMs worldwide. He has twice served on the Board of PMI and is an Honorary Fellow or member of several PM associations world-wide. He has had a number of senior PM roles in the US nuclear industry and remains an influential consultant. top

Sir Tim is co-founder of the Eden Project, probably one of the most celebrated and innovative projects of recent times. He is Executive Vice Chair of Eden Project Ltd and Executive Chairman of Eden Project International Ltd. and not content with one amazing project, he has also developed the ’Lost Gardens of Heligon’ project. Both these projects have provided a massive boost to Cornwall and the south west of England. Sir Tim raised the needed funds and was the driving force behind the Eden Project, pulling the team of people together to build what has been described as 'the eighth wonder of the world'. Professor Emeritus Peter Allan Thompson (Deceased) – Awarded 1993
Peter Thompson had the distinction of being the first person in the UK and Europe to be appointed a University Professor of Project Management, at Manchester, in 1989. He had graduated in Civil Engineering at Queen Mary College, London. in 1952. After army work on bomb disposal he joined a leading firm of consulting engineers and with them had 12 years of increasing responsibility for the design, construction and management of power stations and large water engineering projects. In 1966 he made the move to research and teaching on appointment as Lecturer in Civil Engineering at UMIST [the University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology]. He was co-founder of the University's Project Management Group. Under his leadership the Group became recognised internationally as the UK’s leading team in teaching and research in project management. He initiated pioneering research and conferences with industry on problems of construction contracts and productivity and was co-leader of the research team put together to learn lessons of the Thames flood bank raising projects, the first of the Group’s studies of management of emergencies. His 1981 book Organisation and Economics of Construction was one of the first to underpin teaching with live research. He planned the innovations in contract payment systems developed and tested by Martin Barnes that led to the first concepts of the New Engineering Contract. With John Perry he led a programme of studies of different types of construction contracts. They undertook a commission from the Institution of Civil Engineers to produce a guide to risk management. Their work for the UK government included training programmes for senior overseas officials and a review of risk management in the impending deed to start the removal of large North Sea oil & gas platforms. Peter was awarded two Institution of Civil Engineers prizes. His doctoral students became professors in several continents. He had been an active supporter of the Institution of Civil Engineers since his student days and was always a leader in collaborative work with industry and professional bodies. He was an early member of the Association for Project Management. He was elected an Honorary Fellow in recognition of his 30 years work developing project managers and advancing project management practice. top

Professor Geoffrey Trimble (Deceased) – Awarded 2001
Geoffrey Trimble was an important founding member of APM. He became the first President of APM and the first vice President of what is now IPMA. He began his working life, after serving in WW2, with Ove Arup, then with PE as PM for the new Alfa Romeo plant in Milan. A dedicated network analyst his ground-breaking work on the Victoria Line for London Underground was a major vindication of the technique. Geoffrey joined Loughborough University taking the position of the first professor of construction management. Also during his time at the university, he jointly founded the European Construction Institute (ECI). He remained at Loughborough until his retirement. Geoffrey was a most distinguished academic after whom the APM post graduate award is named. top
Arthur Tulip – Awarded 1992
Arthur Tulip is a founding member of APM with outstanding continuous service since inception, notably as Honorary Treasurer from 1972 to 1977 and then as Honorary Secretary from 1977 to 1983. He graduated with a degree in mathematics from London and worked for some years doing research in navigation and nuclear systems. He spent nearly 40 years with Honeywell / Bull designing, developing, maintaining and implementing modelling systems including for project management. The consulting covered many industries including UN, local government, broadcasting organisations and various industries in UK, Europe and USA. top

Rodney Turner has worked in the process plant and petrochemical industries and as a management consultant in shipbuilding, manufacturing, telecommunications, computing, finance, government and other areas. He is prolific author of PM books and thinking. David Waboso CBE – Awarded 2011
David is an internationally renowned engineer and project manager who has worked on some of the world’s most prestigious infrastructure programmes including Docklands Light Railway and the Jubilee Line in the UK, projects for the European Rail Agency and World Bank funded projects in Africa. After eleven years at London Underground Limited leading the upgrade of both trains and infrastructure he was managing director of Group Digital Railway at Network Rail.

Herbert Walton was a founding member in 1972 of Internet (UK) which later became the Association for Project Managers and later still the current Association for Project Management. From the early 1970s Herbert was a leading force in the formative years of APM. His commitment to project management, coupled with his enormous energy, were instrumental in moving the organisation forward at the time. He was Honorary Secretary and then chairman of Internet (UK) and also vice President of APM. He represented the association on many working parties and had many papers published. top

Professor Stephen Wearne – Awarded 2008
Professor Wearne rose from factory apprentice and sandwich course student to become professor of engineering management at Bradford. His work experience in international water-power project design and construction lead to contract and project management of nuclear power plants in UK and Japan. He came to Manchester in 1964 and was one of the founders of research and teaching in project and contract management. He became a Senior Research Fellow, Project Management Research and Resource Group, University of Manchester. He is an Emeritus Professor of Technological Management at University of Bradford and Founder Chairman of the UK Engineering Project Management Forum.
